Whats On

William D Drake (of Cardiacs) / Paul Morricone / All Hail Hyena

Friday, 18 November 2016 - 8:00pm

William D Drake is possibly one of the most talented musicians composing today. His highly inventive style was carved out as part of what is considered the 'classic' lineup of the prog/punk/psych cult band Cardiacs.

He is best known for his cornucopia of diverse melodic styles whilst playing a plethora of keyboards and synthesizers with them from 1983-1992. It was with them that he honed a unique and prodigious skill as a composer and arranger of complex, intelligent and eccentric musical psychedelia. It was the Cardiacs offshoot Sea Nymphs that Drake teamed up with Sarah & Tim Smith, to carve out a sound which had woven a sense of delightful mysticism and melodic contentment in their only self titled album release.

Drake has also collaborated with a number of musical projects post Cardiacs/Sea Nymphs such as Nervous, Lake of Puppies and North Sea Radio Orchestra.

Post Cardiacs & Sea Nymphs, William D Drake has an even more impressive CV. His solo work in part is an homage to lost music of the past, whilst taking a very English approach to composition which touches on the work of Robert Wyatt and Peter Hammill to name but a few. Drakes self titled debut solo album in 2003 is a sublime collection of musical miniatures which jerk wildly from the gloriously epic, to the intimately prophetic.

Following on from the success of the solo album, Drake released 2 albums simoutaneously in 2007: Yews Paw and Briny Hooves. These two very different bodies of work expose Drake as a master of both modern classical piano composition and of experimental popular music. Subsequent albums 'Rising of the Lights' (2011) and 'Revere Reach' (2015) solidify Drakes place as one of the most gifted and diverse composers of the modern age.

Paul Morricone (The Scaramanga Six)

Paul Morricone is best known for his work as the singer-songwriter/guitarist in cult pop/rock group The Scaramanga Six. Lurching wildly from dark and lurid ballads, to visceral punk tinged psychedelia, The 'Six' as they are also known herald an impressive back catalogue which spans over 20 years of music making. Pauls repertoire will provoke with a diverse selection of dark melodies and twisted pop offerings.
