MAP: They Eat Culture's Pop-Up Exhibition & Workspace

Saturday, 1 September 2012 - 10:30am - Sunday, 23 September 2012 - 5:30pm

1st Floor St George’s Centre (Opp H&M)

The people of Preston are invited to have their say on their city’s cultural future at They Eat Culture’s special ‘Pop-Up Exhibition’ on the first floor of St. George’s Shopping Centre over Preston Guild 2012, Saturday 1st – Sunday 23rd September, as part of the Then The City initiative.

The space will also showcase two of the unique and startling arts intervention projects that the Preston organisation has produced for the once every twenty years celebration.

Foxton Lives

For the Heritage Lottery Fund project ‘Foxton Lives’, They Eat Culture have partnered up with the community at the city’s Foxton Centre to create a personal and fascinating archive of the lives of those who use the centre, providing an alternative view to the ‘official’ versions of history that are usually offered on such landmark occasions.

Gathering photos, and creating stories and films, the project will be shared and celebrated with an exhibition to be displayed at the pop-up shop, as well as at the Avenham-based centre itself. More details on the website

Preston 3Twenty

The shop will also showcase another Guild initiative by the organisation. Preston 3Twenty is an ambitious and captivating literature project - facilitated in tandem with TEC’s writing arm, Lancashire Writing Hub - which sees three celebrated British writers, David Gaffney, Claire Massey and Richard Evans, deliver newly commissioned short stories, set in Preston's past, present and future, to be disseminated through various multimedia platforms.

These works will be presented via a printed map outlining audio walking trails around the city. Participating members of the public don especially provided headphones to have the stories whispered in their ears, accompanied by a bespoke soundtrack from multi-award-winning composer Nick Casswell, as they wander around the Guild city.

Then The City

The wider Then The City initiative is an ongoing cross-arts project from They Eat Culture, triggered by research from Arts Council England that revealed Preston as the 17th least culturally engaged ward in the country. They Eat Culture will be working with communities from Preston to develop arts programming in new and unusual spaces in the city.

In the pop-up space itself, there will be a chance for shoppers, Guild visitors & passers by to drop in and add to future understanding of what the city wants to see developed. They'll be able to give some 'city counselling' feedback, play with our interactive maps to reinvent the city centre, and register to attend talk sessions where their view will be documented, and ideas sketched out by our resident shop artists.

See you there!
