Whats On

The Monochrome Set / The Things / Sprinters

Saturday, 9 April 2016 - 8:00pm

The Continental proudly welcomes back... The Monochrome Set!

The band features original members Bid (Vocals) and Andy Warren (Bass) with Steve Brummell on drums and John Paul Moran on keyboards. Formed in 1976 as The B-Sides, with Adam Ant as an original member, the band soon became The Monochrome Set and were heavily influential in the post-punk scene that evolved after the initial scorched earth of punk.

The band’s early releases were on the legendary Rough Trade label before signing with Virgin offshoot Dindisc and have since had a long association with Cherry Red Records. They have been prolific in their recorded output over the years with an album count now well into double figures.

The band split in 1985 although they recorded and played live sporadically over the years before reforming as a going concern in 2010. A new album was released in 2012, entitled "Platinum Coils". Since then the band have toured all over Europe, the USA and Japan and released two further albums, "Super Plastic City", in 2013, and "Spaces Everywhere" in 2014, with a new album scheduled for release in the Autumn this year.

Plus support from THE THINGS

The Things were formed in 1979 in Manchester and played at the city's St John's College and Russell Club. In 1980 John Peel recorded the band live in Manchester for a planned live release. Buzzcocks drummer John Maher invited The Things to record a single as the first release on his new label. The band agreed and John joined the line up as drummer and released the single on Imperial records. A radio session for Mark Radcliffe's 'Transmission' radio show followed. The Things toured Britain with Buzzcocks and also appeared with other bands including The Damned, The Fall, Orange Juice and New Order. On his show John Peel described The Things as a semi legendary Manchester band.

Plus special guests SPRINTERS

Sprinters are four piece indie rock band from Manchester. Their melancholy guitar sound has been likened to bands such as Pavement and Real Estate. Since playing their first show in September last year the band have gone to support bands such as Chastity Belt, La Luz and Meat Wave. The band are currently finishing their debut album which will be released this summer.

"A regular on the Manchester circuit, Neil Jarvis has recently turned his attentions to a new band in Sprinters, the sort of scuzzed up, rough-round-the-edges melancholic guitar pop band that Manchester does so well.'' - Grey Lantern
