Whats On

Aquaserge (France) plus Three Dimensional Tanx & The Consciousness Collective

Sunday, 24 May 2015 - 7:30pm

AQUASERGE

Aquaserge is a brilliant psych / prog / krautrock / experimental band from France featuring members of Stereolab, Tame Impala and Melody's Echo Chamber

Aquaserge was formed in 2005 by musicians eager to explore the abyssal depths of the rock; kraut, noise, progressive, free ... and explode the "song format" in the spirit of the late 60s in the manner of Wyatt, Gainsbourg, Coltrane, Zappa, Hendrix and the Beach Boys. Their music is composed collectively in the studio and tells of the strange mythology of Captain Serge wandering in the abyss aboard his submarine cigar…

They appeared for the first time in concert in June 2008 opening for Bertrand Burgalat. Group members regularly leave their cabin to work with Makoto Kawabata and Acid Mothers Temple, Kinski, Monad, Forever Poppy, Moodoïd, and play on stage with the likes of Stereolab, Laetitia Sadier, April March, Bertrand Burgalat, Hyperclean, Tahiti80, Tame Impala Melody's Echo Chamber, Damo Suzuki (CAN), Dorian Pimpernel, Jef Barbara.

They’ve frequented the Klangbad Festival (Faust studio), taken electronic naps in Toulouse with Kawabata Makoto and Keiji Haino, played alongside Gong and Art Bears, and frequently tour the USA and Europe.

THREE DIMENSIONAL TANX

These days, the music press is littered with bands described as ‘psychedelic’, ‘drone-rock’, ‘with hints of Krautrock’ and so on. In their own high-energy way, Lancaster/Manchester-based Three Dimensional Tanx have been ploughing this particular furrow for over 10 years now. During this time, they have been ‘sound carriers’ for CAN man Damo Suzuki, performed at Tate Britain with artist Linder Sterling, played at a Spacemen 3 art exhibition at the request of Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spiritualised, Dead Skeletons) and smashed it at 2013’s Liverpool Psych Fest

Their live reputation is so fierce, that they managed to get a full crowd at Liverpool Psych Fest even though their set clashed with Fuzz and Hookworms. They’ve shared bills with bands like the Cosmic Dead, White Hills, Gnod, Trembling Bells, Lucid Dream, The Oscillation, Helicon, the Anteloids and many more from the UK’s psych scene.

The band’s recorded work was on hiatus as former guitarist David Blackwell left to concentrate full-time on the Lovely Eggs. However, with two new members, the now 5-piece Three Dimensional Tanx are on a roll.

‘Stalwarts of the North West, Three Dimensional Tank [sic] return with a bolstered line-up hot on the heels of setting lasers stun at last year’s Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia. ‘I Am Go’ has an element of the punkier end of Italian garage acts of the early ’90s and newer Swedish acts like The Movements in its soaring pace, cheese wire organ and distraught vocalisms. The flip mixes Detroit guitars with Spacemen 3 and an organ melody straight out of a frug a-go-go ’60s movie party scene before heading off into a moody vocal. Again, it’s prevalent of the ’90s garage sound that once seemed as if it was on its way to extinction. The Tanx aren’t aiming at being super 60s or anything – rather, they mix up a number of influences and blast it out.’ Jon ‘Mojo’ Mills, Shindig 39, May 2014
